The C.A.S.T Study… if you’re interested send me a message
Coping And Stress in TBI: The C.A.S.T Study
We want to better understand how the stress you experience every day and the ways in which you deal with that stress influences how you feel over long periods of time.
Benefits:
You will receive a $5 gift card to Starbucks for one time participation and the benefit of help others in similar situations.
Who is being asked to participate:
Approximately 100 individuals in the Seattle and surrounding community whom have had a head injury (e.g., stroke, motor vehicle accident, etc.) are being offered an opportunity to participate.
What are you asked to do:
You are being asked to fill out a questionnaire that will take approximately 60 minutes to complete. After it is completed you will receive a gift card.
When:
On a predetermined day, Amanda Herges, M.A. or (an)other student researcher(s) will show up after group and offer the opportunity on that day. If you cannot make it on that day she can come another time.
Where:
The questionnaires will be completed at the location where you participate in your group.
Your responses to the questionnaire are kept confidential and your name will not be on them. Your participation in this study is optional. You are free to decline the opportunity without fear that not participating will effect your participation in your support group or your relationship with the Brain Injury Association of Washington.
If group members are interested please have the facilitator email Amanda to schedule a day for her to stop in after the group meetings.
If you want to participate send me an email: silast@uw.edu

Oh yeah and here’s the flier for Wednesday: Nov 10 Young Adults with TBI poster
At our next meeting we’re going to break into small groups and talk about different things, then we’ll come back together as a big group and discuss our discussions, If you have any ideas about things to talk about in small groups, please post your ideas as comments on this post, or if you don’t like that idea email me at silast@uw.edu
And finally I’m still looking for suggestions for topics to have forums on… so uh same deal about that, post ideas here or email me…
thanks a bunch! and I’ll see you all on Wednesday!
November 10th
Hello all you wonderful people!
I haven’t written anything out formally but I just wanted to give you an outline for our next meeting:
Since we’ve had quite a few new members come in the last couple of months we should take some time and get to know each other. Dr Shenouda (the Rehab Dr who was at the forum) will be attending out meeting, and we’ll take a few minutes with him to answer any questions people have about the forum from last month, or rehab/brain injuries in general.
here’s the rough schedule
6:00 arrive/sign in/name tags
6:10 Announcements: a reminder about the blog/topics for future Forums/any other announcements people have
6:15 Dr Shenouda can answer any questions (if you have anything burning in your mind, let me know and I’ll keep a list)
6:30 break into small groups and discuss different topics: time management skills, overcoming loneliness/sadness, dealing with depression, meeting people, dealing with other people’s hang ups…
7:00 reconvene as a large group and discuss what conclusions each group reached and what questions still persist
7:20 brain storm about good ideas for future forums, the next one is in January
I need something from you guys though! I need you to send me ideas for topics to discuss in small groups. Also we need suggestions for future forums! I suspect that this last one wasn’t exactly what people were hoping for, but the forums are a great resource for the Brain Injured Community, you have the opportunity to choose exactly what gets discussed/presented at them, let me know what you want to know more about!
Thanks guys!
Oh and please let me know if there is anything that you’d like to be different about the group, it belongs to all of us so it should reflect what we all want.
Thanks
Silas
PS I need to update the flier and I’m still going to put up directions to the room we’re in on the blog but briefly:
From the triangle garage
- follow signs to the pacific elevators
- go past them to the BB elevators
- go up to 9
- see the signage
From the S-1 Garage
-take to tunnel to the hospital
-at the end of the hall go right then immediate left
-you’ll see the BB elevators ahead on your right
-ride up to 9
-see signage
see you on Wednesday the 10th!
Silas
Next meeting is November 10th, and I have questions for you:
We didn’t have a chance to talk about our upcoming meeting at this last one so i wanted to open this up to discussion here on the blog. I’ve been thinking about the forum and as i mentioned elsewhere i think it was a bit over my head and I wanted to check if the feeling was mutual among the group. I’m assuming that it is, and for me i know it would be nice to have someone come and speak to the group about the information covered at the forum. I talked about this a bit with Dr Shenouda (the rehab Dr at the forum) afterwords and he expressed a willingness to speak to our group. He’s also a specialist in brain injuries so i thought he would be good because we wouldn’t have to limit our questions to Brain Scans, i bet he can handle whatever we throw at him.
I’ve sent him an email asking if he’d be available to speak… but before i officially ask him i want to ask you guys. I’m not the one in charge of deciding what we do, I’m just supposed to make what we all want happen. Here it is, the big QUESTION: do you guys want to have a speaker at our next meeting? someone who can field general Brain Injury Q+A? or are there any other ideas? there are no wrong answers so don”t be shy! we all want to hear all of your ideas!
Here are a couple others (ideas that is): we could talk about “time management” and offer tips on how we deal with that in our own ways, we could discuss ways to meet people and begin to overcome loneliness, different tricks to beat depression.. these are just some things off the top of my head, but i want to hear from all of you! no exceptions! so weigh in if you like one of these ideas or if you have any other ones, let us know!
Is there anyone who really wants to bring refreshments to the next meeting? this is not mandatory we just want you to come
Last night!
Thanks for coming all of you, i think it was a great meeting. My only complaint would be the we didn’t have enough time before the forum to talk. A lot of us went to the forum and i wanted to check in about how people felt about the information presented? Some of it was pretty complicated and i know I didn’t get all of it but i thought we could open it up to a discussion: do you have question that were unanswered? are there things that were presented that you were confused about? should we discuss things at our next meeting? would you like to have a presenter who could speak more about brain scans? the anatomy of the brain? what different parts of the brain do? i could go on but you get the picture… I’m asking for feedback and thus far I’ve gotten very little. Hoping that this will change! Please let me know what you think, or thought.
Welcome to the Blog! Please make a suggestion! any suggestion

Question for the group
I just received an email from Robert A. Friedman & Associates, P.S, they’re a law firm who helps people get on SSDI and SSI. They’ve offered to give a free presentation to our group. Of course they will be steering people towards working with them to deal with anything social security related, but if anyone is going down this path right now it may be helpful. On the other hand if this doesn’t apply to anyone lets not waste time. does anyone have any thoughts?
Leave comments!
I’ll also bring this up at our next meeting
